Job Overview and Requirements

Equal Measure is a $6 million nonprofit evaluation and philanthropic services firm based in Philadelphia. Formally established as a nonprofit 501(c)3 in 1988, Equal Measure has maintained a strong focus on public policy issues and has evolved into an expanding professional practice funded largely by foundations and social sector organizations. A large portion of Equal Measure’s services consists of national multi-year initiatives that include many sites and require complex strategies and programs.


We partner with our clients to apply new ways of thinking and learning to achieve their social change objectives. These objectives may include improving access to education and the workforce, strengthening economic mobility, and building healthier communities, among other goals. In these engagements, we draw from five service lines—program and strategy design, evaluation, capacity building, technical assistance, and communications—which we customize based on the needs of the client and its grantees.


About the Position


The Senior Evaluation Consultant is a full-time position providing support across multiple evaluation, strategy, and capacity building projects. Under the direction of project directors, the successful candidate will play a critical role in managing activities across approximately five projects of teams ranging from 3-6 members.


Key responsibilities include:


  • Designing and overseeing the use of evaluative protocols including focus groups, interviews, and surveys
  • Analyzing and managing qualitative and quantitative data
  • Preparing project deliverables
  • Managing the scope, budget, and schedule of projects
  • Delegating responsibilities and supporting/coaching team members
  • Coordinating team information sharing


Senior Consultants also assist in the facilitation of client and prospect meetings—including presenting project findings. Senior Consultants must also display a commitment to racially equitable and culturally responsive consultancy practices. In addition to project work, Senior Consultants participate as active members of organizational committees and contribute to thought leadership and organizational development efforts.


Travel (e.g., site visits, data collection, and client meetings) is required and estimated at 20-25% (depending on implications of COVID-19). Travel is currently suspended due to COVID-19 and will resume at a future date. The extension or lifting of this remote work mandate is dependent on the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic. Candidates will be required to reside within a commutable distance of the Philadelphia region by the time Equal Measure employees are to return to the office.

Essential Requirements


The successful candidate will have a deep commitment to Equal Measure’s mission of elevating insights that help shape powerful investments and fuel sustainable social change. The individual will be a self-starter with strong analytic writing skills, the ability to supervise project teams, a tangible background in mixed-methods evaluation, and five to eight years of applied evaluation and/or research experience. Advanced knowledge of qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis is required, including familiarity with qualitative data analysis software, such as NVivo; survey platforms, such as Qualtrics, SurveyMonkey, or QuestionPro; and statistical programming languages, such as SAS, SPSS, Stata, or R.


Additional requirements include:


  • Familiarity and comfort with applied research, analytic, and evaluation methodologies and outcomes—both qualitative and quantitative
  • Facility with statistical and qualitative analysis software (e.g., SPSS, SAS, Stata, NVIVO, ATLAS.ti)
  • Ability to integrate data from a variety of sources, including literature reviews and other primary and secondary research sources
  • Skillful use of survey, focus group, and interview protocols to elicit data
  • High level of proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong communication skills—both written and oral; in particular, the ability to present analytical information to supervisors, clients, and other stakeholders in a concise, understandable way
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time/project management skills
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues, clients, and partners using strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders, lead teams, manage multiple activities, and resolve issues
  • Ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple, diverse, and competing agendas and engagements


Supervisory / Budgetary Responsibilities


  • Oversee the work of Consultants (a full-time Equal Measure position)—providing coaching and guidance as needed
  • Create project budgets using financial software; monitor project budget expenditures; and work with the CFO on billing, invoicing, and other financial matters
  • Monitor, flag, and escalate budgetary concerns or constraints to Directors or Senior Directors and/or to a member of the Executive Team


Education and Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree with 7-10 years of experience, or Master’s degree with 5-8 years of experience preferred.  (Experience can include post-graduate internships in evaluative methods, applied research, sociology, public administration, statistics, or related fields)
  • Previous experience in data analysis and presentation, project management, consulting, or non-profit/foundation work strongly preferred




Compensation and Benefits

The starting salary range for this position is $65,000-$80,000, depending on experience.
